John Humphrys has been co-presenting the Today programme from China this morning and he’s been blogging away on his adventures in the country, including a short video clip on how he was thwarted in his attempts to get an interview with the wife of the imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo.
This short reporter-style video first of all reminds us of how we’ve missed John Humphrys on the telly – as a newsman, that is, as opposed to hosting quiz games.
In one of his items on Today this morning he referred to the pollution levels in China. I can testify to this having run two training programmes in China in the past few months, the most recent in the huge industrial complex of Tianjin some two hours’ drive from Beijing. You could taste the industrial effluent in your mouth during the taxi ride to get there.
My colleague Andrew Harvey and I were training some westerners working for a multinational in China. They told us that expats in Tianjin are informed upon arrival that you’ve got six years in China before your health starts suffering. Scary!
